New workshops on Code of Conduct enforcement

Otter Tech is offering two remote workshops on Code of Conduct enforcement training. These are hands-on workshops where you’ll practice taking a report of a Code of Conduct violation and following up with a reported person. The workshop includes one practice scenario for event organizers and one practice scenario for online community moderators. The workshop is done remotely via a Zoom video conference.

The remote workshop dates are:

  • April 29, 2019 at 1 pm to 5 pm UTC / 6 am to 10 am PDT / 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm IST
  • May 16, 2019 at 10 pm to 2 am UTC / 3 pm to 7 pm PDT / 8 am to 12 pm AEST

Individual tickets for either workshop are $350 USD each. They can be purchased on the Otter Tech website.

What does the workshop cover?

Most of the workshop time is spent in paired practice sessions. The instructor will give each pair a real-world Code of Conduct violation scenario. The pairs will roleplay receiving a report of a Code of Conduct violation, and following up with the person who has been reported.

Dustin Ingram, an event organizer for the Python Texas conference, talked about their experience in a previous workshop:

  • One practice scenario for a report given at an event
  • One practice scenario for a report given in an online community
  • Discussion on bias, microaggressions, personal conflicts, and false reporting
  • Frameworks for evaluating a response to a report
  • 40 minutes total of Q&A
